If you have more than one chiral center, then there are some useful ways to check quickly to see if a molecule is chiral: Tests for chirality. (a) (Most reliable) Check to see if the molecule has a pair of non-superimposable mirror image forms. (b) (Nearly always works) Look for a mirror plane; if no mirror plane, the molecule is nearly always

An amino acid has the general formula H₂N-CH (R)-COOH, where R stands for the different acids. Notice that the central C atom is chiral — it has four different groups attached — so the molecule can exist as a pair of enantiomers (nonsuperimposable mirror images). One of these is the D isomer, and the other is L (i.e. a pair of R/S isomers).

Jul 30, 2022Chirality Test 1: Draw the mirror image of the molecule and see if the two molecules are the same or different. If they are different, then the molecule is chiral. If they are the same, then it is not chiral. (This is the most comprehensive test but is the most difficult to apply.) Chirality Test 2: If the molecule has only one chiral center
